If you're hosting, this is usually the biggest headache and the thing that justifies the whole shipment. Forty small items bought individually where you live is an expensive afternoon; forty bought in Pune and shipped together is not.

How to build the box so it isn't expensive

Worth two minutes before you send your list, because Diwali orders are exactly the shape that goes wrong.

Couriers price a box on its size as much as its weight. Chivda, farsan and wafers weigh nothing but fill a box with air — ten dollars of snacks can cost seventy dollars to ship on their own. Meanwhile a saree or a set of jewellery is small, dense and worth many times more.

So pair them. Put the clothes, the jewellery, the stitched outfit in first — those justify the freight by themselves. Then fill the remaining space with the sweets and namkeen you actually want. The box was going to be that size anyway; the food rides along for very little.
